Ho GPRTU Branch 8 Holds Press Conference to Assure Public of Calm at the Main Lorry Station

The Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) Ho Branch 8 has held a press conference following a misunderstanding between executives of Branch 2 and Branch 8 at the Ho lorry station over the weekend.

GPRTU Branch 8 held a press conference

The incident began on Friday when Branch 2 reportedly ceased the tent used by Branch 8 to board passengers traveling from Ho to Madina, effectively preventing Branch 8 from operating. This action sparked a confrontation between officials of the two branches, which disrupted activities at the station from Friday through Saturday.

Branch 8 Chairman, Mr. Francis Abbah, reported the matter to the National GPRTU, which subsequently requested police intervention. The police swiftly stepped in, restoring calm at the station.

Addressing the media on behalf of Mr. Abbah, Branch 8 Secretary, Madam Vida Nkpente, condemned the actions of Branch 2 executives. She described the disruption as an unnecessary attempt to destabilize Branch 8’s operations.

This latest development comes after a similar violent confrontation in 2024 at the Volta Regional Secretariat of GPRTU, when former executives of Ho Branch 2 resisted a leadership transition. That case was later settled in court at Koforidua, paving the way for five new executives to be sworn in for Ho Branch 2 on November 13, 2024.

According to Madam Nkpente, the newly sworn-in Branch 2 executives have since targeted Branch 8, culminating in the recent seizure of their tent. She dismissed rumors suggesting that Branch 8 operates illegally, insisting that the branch has been legally recognized since its inception in 2016.

“Our leaders, with the support of the police, have restored calm. We want to assure the public that the station is safe for transportation,” she stated.

Madam Nkpente further commended the GPRTU national leadership, the Volta Regional Police Commander, and the police personnel who were present for their swift intervention in restoring peace.
