According to the Public Relations Officer of the Volta Regional Police Command, Chief Inspector Francis Gomado, the suspects include 190 men and one woman. He explained that the joint operation was launched to apprehend individuals believed to have assaulted police officers on duty at the Ehi Police Station before setting the station ablaze.

Chief Inspector Gomado revealed that the suspects vandalized two police vehicles and destroyed several items at the station.

He further stated that all the suspects are currently in custody at the Regional Police Headquarters in Ho and will undergo screening, after which appropriate legal actions will be taken against those found culpable.

Chief Inspector Gomado, however, noted that the number of suspects is likely to reduce after the screening, as some innocent individuals may have been caught up in the mass arrest.

The post Akoefe Gadza Celebrates Yam Festival with Chiefs’ Enstoolment and Community Development Initiatives first appeared on Zilideon News.

The event featured the outdooring of newly enstooled chiefs, the commissioning of developmental projects, and the reaffirmation of the community’s commitment to progress under the theme, Celebrating Tradition, Inspiring Development.”

Honouring Ancestral Heritage

In his keynote address, Togbe Dikro IV, Chief of Akoefe Gadza, traced the origins of the Yam Festival to the migration of their ancestors from Notsie in present-day Togo. According to him, the festival is a traditional expression of gratitude by farmers to God for protection, strength, and a successful farming season.

“Over the years,” he noted, “the festival has evolved beyond merrymaking. It now serves as a platform to raise funds for community development projects that complement government efforts toward national development.”

Week-Long Celebration and Cultural Activities

The celebration officially began on Sunday, 21st September, with a community clean-up exercise and a vibrant borborbor night. From Tuesday, 23rd to Thursday, 25th, prayer sessions were held to seek divine blessings for a successful festival.

On Friday, 26th September, a colourful float procession from the Ho Market to Akoefe Gadza formally ushered in the main festivities.

The climax of the celebration came on Saturday, 27th September, with a grand durbar of chiefs, cultural performances, and fundraising activities to support local development.

On Sunday, 28th September, the festival continued with recreational events including outdoor games such as ludo and draughts, and a lively cooking competition among the clans, aimed at strengthening bonds and celebrating culinary heritage.

Festivities extended into Monday, 29th September, featuring a football competition at 8:00 a.m., bringing together teams from across the community in a spirit of friendly rivalry. In the evening, the celebration reached another cultural high-point with a borborbor dance competition among the clans, showcasing the rich music and dance traditions of the people of Akoefe.

Enstoolment of Chiefs and Strengthening of Traditional Authority

A major highlight of the durbar was the enstoolment and outdooring of 42 new chiefs and queen mothers to support the growing administrative and developmental responsibilities of the community. Among those enstooled were:

 • Togbe Kata I, Chief of Kataviawo
 • Mama Kata II (Mama Adzah II), Queen Mother of Kataviawo
 • Tsidome Safofia, representing all Akoefe communities
 • Togbe Adzah I, Dutor of Gadza
 • Boh Seth Kwesi, Youth Chief of Adevi

Togbe Dikro IV explained that due to the increasing workload of development projects, clan chiefs were necessary to ensure efficiency and effective project supervision. He also urged community members to respect their clan heads and traditional leaders.

Speaking to the media, Mr. Wilson Ziklui, the Kingmaker, emphasized that Akoefe Gadza, being a large community, qualifies as a Traditional Council, and the enstoolment of clan chiefs was essential to support the Council’s operations.

Ongoing Development and Challenges

Over the past two years, proceeds from the Yam Festival have been used to fund several developmental projects, including the construction of bridges and culverts, and gutters to enhance water flow and protect local roads.

Togbe Dikro IV highlighted the plight of the main bridge connecting Akoefe Gadza to nearby communities—originally built by the Germans—which collapsed nearly 60 years ago. Despite promises from the Ho Municipal Assembly to provide a grader to gravel the roads, delays have stalled progress. He apologized to residents for the inconvenience and assured them that the roads would be fixed after this year’s celebration.

In his address, Dutor Adzah, speaking on behalf of the newly enstooled chiefs, called on the government and non-governmental organizations to assist the community in addressing poor road networks and communication challenges.

Government Support and Promises

The durbar was graced by Togbe Drake Tsigbe IV, Paramount Chief of Akoefe, who commended the Yam Festival Committee for their efforts. He urged the newly enstooled chiefs to put the community first and encouraged transparency and accountability in managing festival funds.

Also present was the Ho Municipal Chief Executive, Hon. Stephen Adom, who pledged that all roads in Akoefe would be tarred by the end of 2026. “Although I had several invitations today, I chose to be here at Akoefe to reaffirm my commitment to this community,” he stated.

Unity in Diversity

Akoefe is made up of four main communities: Akoefe Tokor, Akoefe Gadza, Akoefe Achati, and Akoefe Avenui. The Yam Festival remains a vital event that not only preserves the people’s rich cultural heritage but also serves as a rallying point for unity, leadership, and community-driven development.

The flooding, which displaced thousands and destroyed livelihoods across the Volta Region, left lasting scars on Mepe. Against this backdrop, MTN Ghana’s Regional Manager for Eastern, Volta, and Oti, Ransford Gyan, presented the cheque at a brief ceremony, assuring residents that the brand was not only committed to business but also to the community’s recovery.

“We share in your pain and salute your resilience, unity, and determination,” Mr. Gyan said. “Our support is to show that MTN stands with you as you rebuild.”

Beyond the cash contribution, MTN’s presence at the festival included customer service and sales stands, MoMo fraud awareness campaigns, and community engagement activities aimed at reconnecting with residents and rebuilding trust.

Torgbe Kwasi Nego VI, Mankralo of Mepe, expressed deep appreciation for the gesture, describing the donation as “timely and impactful” as the community works to restore infrastructure and livelihoods.

The Afenorto Festival, which draws natives home from across the country and abroad, has long served as a platform for unity and development dialogue. This year, it took on renewed significance — serving as both a cultural anchor and a rallying point for rebuilding lives.

The research team, led by Dr. Kofi Asare, Dr. Samuel Fosuhene, and Mr. Benjamin Wemegah of GSSTI, together with Dr. Emelia Asamoah and Dr. Richard Damoah of Morgan State University, deployed advanced air quality drones to collect real-time data on atmospheric pollutants. Their work was supported by EPA CEO Prof. Nana Ama Browne-Klutse and Sydney Kweku Danso, acting Eastern Regional Director.

The survey measured levels of particulate matter (PM2.5 and PM10), nitrogen dioxide (NO₂), sulfur dioxide (SO₂), and other airborne pollutants, aiming to identify pollution sources such as vehicular emissions, industrial activity, and biomass burning.

Preliminary findings revealed pollutant concentrations that exceed the World Health Organization’s recommended thresholds, raising concerns about public health impacts including respiratory illnesses and premature deaths.

“Air pollution is a mounting challenge in Ghana’s growing cities,” noted Dr. Asamoah. “By combining local expertise with space-enabled technology, we aim to provide actionable data for policy development and sustainable urban planning.”

The team advocates for stronger public awareness initiatives and policy reforms including the promotion of cleaner transport systems, improved waste management practices, and stricter control of industrial emissions. Plans are also underway to extend monitoring to other Ghanaian cities.

This initiative underscores the critical role of scientific collaboration in addressing environmental health challenges and protecting urban populations across the country.

After months of hard work and dedication, the Elike Foundation is set to officially launch its first major development project – the Harmony Hub in Demete, Klefe, located in the Volta Region.

The launch, scheduled for Saturday, May 24, 2025, marks a significant milestone in the foundation’s mission to promote holistic development and community empowerment in the region.

The Harmony Hub, which broke ground earlier this year, features a yoga center and a community library. It aims to enhance the well-being and literacy of residents, particularly children and youth in Klefe and surrounding communities.

Mr. Festus Tandoh, Administrator of the Elike Foundation, visited the project site in Demete on February 23 to inspect progress and encourage volunteers. “Elike simply means to be strengthened and deeply rooted,” Mr. Tandoh said during his visit. “We are here for the people of Klefe, Demete, the Volta Region, Ghana, and the world at large.”

In addition to the yoga and library facilities, the Harmony Hub is envisioned as a multipurpose community center that will include an ICT lab, a sound studio, an art center, a conference hall, football pitches, and accommodation for volunteers. An academy is also part of the foundation’s long-term vision.

The launch will bring together volunteers from across Ghana, many of whom will camp at the center to experience the serene natural environment of Klefe. To kick off the festivities, a donation drive will be held on May 23, during which the foundation will distribute educational materials to students in five communities, including Klefe.

Following the official opening on May 24, the Harmony Hub will begin operations with daily yoga sessions, open library hours, and a Saturday Reading and Fun Club designed to promote literacy and creativity among children.

Speaking on the purpose of the project, Mr. Tandoh emphasized that the foundation is not driven by personal gain but by a commitment to uplift and support the vulnerable. “To help humanity is to directly help yourself,” he told volunteers.

The launch of the Harmony Hub marks just the beginning of Elike Foundation’s larger vision to empower individuals, protect the environment, and create opportunities for development throughout the Volta Region and beyond.
