Ho GPRTU Branch 8 Donates to Ho Central Prison Inmates
As part of activities marking the ongoing Asogli Yam Festival, the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU), Branch 8, has donated assorted items to the Ho Central Prison. The donation included bags of rice, tubers of yam, vegetable oil, sanitary pads, and other essential supplies.
The gesture, according to the Branch Chairman, Mr. Francis Abbah, was aimed at showing care and love to the inmates. He explained that the festival provided an opportunity to extend compassion to people in confinement, stressing that many inmates had undergone positive transformation during their time in prison, with some even becoming pastors and responsible members of society.
Mr. Abbah further emphasized that supporting inmates is part of the union’s social responsibility. “Visiting them and showing love reminds them that they are not forgotten, and this makes reintegration into society easier after serving their terms,” he said.
He noted that while the union has previously supported hospitals and other institutions, this was their first donation to the Ho Central Prison. Given the prison’s population of over 400 inmates, he assured that this would not be the last. He also appealed to individuals and organizations to extend similar support to the prison and other vulnerable institutions.
Items donated included:
- 5 bags of 50kg rice
- 50 tubers of yam
- 15 large packs of toilet rolls
- 5 boxes of sanitary pads
- 1 gallon of vegetable oil
The donation was made to both male and female inmates, with the sanitary pads specifically given to the female inmates.
Receiving the items on behalf of the prison, Rev. ASP Courage Atsu, Chaplain for the Volta and Oti regions, expressed his gratitude to GPRTU Branch 8. He encouraged the union to continue supporting the inmates and appealed for more such gestures in the future.
