The initiative aimed to safeguard both women and men against breast cancer through early detection, education on risk factors, and awareness of preventive measures.

Participants expressed their appreciation to the MP for his effort in bringing such a vital health program to their community.

Speaking at the event, Madam Yayra Ahiafor, a health practitioner, explained that breast cancer remains the most common cancer among women worldwide and is a leading cause of cancer-related deaths. She emphasized, however, that men are also at risk of developing the disease.

Madam Ahiafor advised both men and women to seek medical attention immediately if they notice any unusual lumps in their breasts. She outlined key warning signs of breast cancer, including a new lump or thickening in the breast or armpit, skin changes such as dimpling or redness, alterations in breast size or shape, and nipple changes like inversion or unusual discharge.

She further noted that, while women naturally have larger breast tissue, men should pay particular attention to any protrusions or unusual swelling in their chest area.

According to Madam Ahiafor, breast cancer is highly deadly, which is why both government and international organizations continue to prioritize awareness, research, and treatment initiatives. She also mentioned that factors such as a family history of breast cancer, excessive alcohol consumption, smoking, and failure of nursing mothers to breastfeed can increase one’s risk of developing the disease.

Madam Valeria, one of the attendees expressed gratitude for the program, saying she had learned how to conduct self-breast examinations and identify early warning signs. She added that she plans to share the knowledge gained with others who could not attend.

Madam Valeria also commended Hon. Edem Kofi Kpotosu and the organizers for their commitment to promoting health awareness through the screening exercise.

School children were not left out — pupils from Tokokoe M.A. JHS also took part in the screening exercise, learning about breast health, self-examination, and preventive care.

This breast cancer screening forms part of Hon. Kpotosu’s broader community health initiative aimed at improving access to healthcare services and promoting preventive medicine across the Ho Central Constituency.
