Toronto’s Iconic Yonge Dundas Square was renamed Sankofa Square

On 23rd August 2025, Toronto’s Iconic Yonge Dundas Square was renamed Sankofa Square, a powerful symbol unveiled on the International Day for the remembrance of the slave trade and it’s Abolition.

Representing Ghana and His Excellency, President John Dramani Mahama, were Honourable Abla Dzifa Gomashie, Minister for Tourism, Culture and creative Arts, and Honourable James Gyakye Quason, Deputy minister for Foreign Affairs.

At the historic moment, the Ghana Tourism Authority, on behalf of CEO Mrs Maame Efua Houadzeto, highlighted Ghana’s role as the gateway of Pan African memory and cultural renaissance, showcasing our nation’s enduring identity as the cultural tourism hub of Africa.
